How to Become A Member of the Annual Conference

Action: Help Your Local Church Elect a
Pro-Reform Lay Member
of the Iowa Annual Conference.
Please
act now.
Key
points:
1.
This year your Local Church will elect its Lay
Member(s) of the 2007 Iowa Annual Conference —which
will elect Iowa's delegates to the vitally important
2008 UMC General Conference.
2.
Pray and plan together with pro-reform friends in
your
Local Church.
3.
Get information: How many Lay Members does
your Local Church elect? What is the date of your
Charge Conference this year? Who are the members
of your Local Church's Committee on Lay Leadership?
(This was the Nominations Committee; now renamed; see
The Book of Discipline, par. 251.c.) The Charge
Conference is usually held in the
September-to-December time period.
4.
Prayerfully choose a strong pro-reform candidate
for
each Lay Member position and for each Alternate
position. They must have been United Methodist
members for at
least 2 years and active participants
for at least 4
years, except in a newly organized
Church. (The
Book of Discipline, par. 251.2.)
5.
Consider and pray:
are YOU willing and able to serve as a Lay
Member? Also consider recommending
persons to serve on
the Committee on Lay
Leadership; usually
the Charge Conference each year elects three,
for three-year terms. Your recommendations
will be most effective if made in the Spring or Summer
.
6.
Several pro-reform persons should
talk
with your Pastor and the Committee on Lay
Leadership members,
and recommend your candidates. Do not delay.
The Committee usually
discusses
nominations before the Charge Conference.
7.
If the
Committee on Lay Leadership does not nominate your
candidate(s), go to the Charge
Conference, nominate your candidate(s), and request
a written ballot.
You have the right to make
nominations from
the floor (The Book of Discipline,
par. 249). Don't
let opposition or criticism stop you. Many more
Methodist Laity Reform Movement members are needed.
________
Three Ways to Become an
Equalization Member of the Iowa Annual Conference
I. Be a lay person serving in a Conference position.
(There are 32 positions or
categories listed in the 2006
Conference Journal, pages 405-406.)
II. Be a lay person serving in District
leadership as Lay Leader, UMM
President, UMW President, or Council
on Ministries Chairperson.
III. Be a lay person elected at District
Conference in April or May upon
recommendation of the District
Nominating Committee (see next section).
________
To be Elected at
District Conference:
1. Contact your District office (see below
for information) of your desire to
be an equalization member of the 2007 Iowa Annual
Conference. Talk
with both the District Secretary and the District
Superintendent, if
possible.
2. Inform the Chairperson of the District
Nominating Committee of your
desire. The District Secretary has the contact
information.
3. Speak with members of the District
Nominating Committee of your
interest.
The more people who know of your desire, the more
likely you may be selected
by the District Nominating Committee to be put on the slate of names.
This is
not an election where you will be running against another person
with a vote
taken.
